Robuchon A GaleraThere are many who consider Robuchon A Galera the best Western-style restaurant in Macau, and for good reason. When globe-hopping celebrity chef Joel Robuchon opened it in 2001, he brought more than black truffles and foie gras to the city. He established a new standard of Western cuisine that has yet to be surpassed, although newcomer rivals from Las Vegas are trying their best. “There is a special personality about the people in Macau,” he said then, “and ultimately it is my ambition to create a restaurant with its own personality, too.” His ambition appears to have been fulfilled in the lush blue and gold restaurant that manages to be opulent and intimate at the same time. Robuchon personally visits Macau four times a year to supervise the menus, and while on the steep side (a rare vintage from its exclusive wine cellar can go for about US$1,000) the restaurant’s price fixe lunches can be excellent value as well as gastronomic adventures.
